generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs) .COM, .NET, .ORG, .BIZ, .INFO
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers www.icann.org is a technical coordination body for the Internet. Created in October 1998 by a broad coalition of the Internet's business, technical, academic, and user communities. Specifically, ICANN coordinates the assignment of the following identifiers that must be globally unique for the Internet to function:
Internet domain names
IP address numbers
protocol parameter and port numbers
In addition, ICANN coordinates the stable operation of the Internet's root Server system.
ICANN requires that full WHOIS information is provided for each domain name that is registered. Information about who is responsible for domain names is publicly available to allow rapid resolution of technical problems and to permit enforcement of consumer protection, trademark, and other laws. The registrar will make this information available to the public on a "Whois" site.

.UK Top Level Domain
All domain names registered or renewed, except where the registrant is a non-trading individual and has positively chosen to opt-out (i.e. by leaving the organisation field blank when registering), will have their address details displayed.
Non-trading individuals include those who do not use or plan to use their domain name for business, trade or professional transactions.
If an individual has chosen to opt-out the address field will not appear on the WHOIS, instead the enquirer will be directed towards their tag holder. In this case the WHOIS will read: "This individual has chosen to opt-out of the WHOIS. Contact via Agent".
Registrants who are business and non-trading individuals are classified as follows:

A domain name registrant is identified as a business if:
The registrant name contains the word "ltd" "plc" or "limited"
Any of the following discrete words appear in the registrant name:

Non-trading individuals
Non-trading individuals are registrants who are not using or intending to use their domain name in the course of a business, trade or profession.
The WHOIS includes address details for all domain names registered or renewed after 1 December 2002, unless the registrant is a non-trading individual and has positively chosen to opt-out (i.e. by leaving the organisation field blank when registering). The address details of these registrations will start to appear from the end of the month in which the domain name is registered or renewed.
It is anticipated that the WHOIS will contain address details for all registrations, except for those who have opted out, by 1 December 2004.
