What characters can be used in a domain name?
The following rules apply to what is considered a valid domain name:
.UK Domain Names
- Use only letters (a-z), numbers(0-9), or hyphen (-)
- Cannot begin or end with a hyphen
- Must have at least 3 characters, but less than 63, including suffixes such as .CO.UK
.COM, .NET Domain Names
- Use only letters (a-z), numbers(0-9), or hyphen (-)
- Cannot begin or end with a hyphen
- Cannot have a name that contains a hyphen as the third and forth characters (e.g. ab--c.com)
- Must have less than 63 characters, not including .COM, .NET
.ORG Domain Names
- Use only letters (a-z), numbers(0-9), or hyphen (-)
- Cannot begin or end with a hyphen
- Must have at least 3 characters and less than 63 characters, not including .ORG
.INFO Domain Names
- Use only letters (a-z), numbers(0-9), or hyphen (-)
- Cannot begin or end with a hyphen
- Must have at least 3 characters and less than 63 characters, not including .INFO
