Does your domain name really matter?

Just like any business, your domain name is your identity. Think of it as your online business card. If you are serious about marketing your products and services on the internet, do it right from the start.

What are domain names?

Domain names are hostnames that provide more easily memorable names to stand in for numeric IP addresses. In fact, this reminds us a little bit of phone numbers. Would not it be easier for us to dial T-E-L-I-V-O instead of having to remember our 11 digit phone number? They are sometimes colloquially (and incorrectly) referred to by marketers as “Web addresses”. The following examples illustrate the difference between a URL (Uniform Resource Locator) and a domain name:

URL: http://www.telivo.com/

Domain name: telivo.com

Domain names can contain numbers and letters, plus the hyphen. And the domain name can contain up to 67 characters.

Does it really matter?

A big YES! is the answer. A good domain name is an asset especially if you have your own domain name. Why? Because of the following reasons:

  • Build name recognition for your company
  • Create a professional image
  • Cyber Mobility – you can move your site without loosing your domain name

The domain name can be optimized for your business, like bestdownload.com. It is much easier to sell and advertise with good domain name. It will most likely be the first thing that your potential customers will encounter, and remember your company if they find your business online.

Tips in choosing and creating a good domain name

.com and .co.uk are the most common TLD's. There other TLDs like .me.uk, .net and others

Maximize your domain name into advertising your company as well. Like bestdownload.com, people will understand what that means and make them want to visit your site. It gives them question on what kind of best downloads you offer.

If you cannot come up with a descriptive domain name, choose a memorable short name that is attractive. Brand it! Meaning, choose a great logo and advertise always (by including prominently in your ads and marketing) and make a slogan that will really reinforce the name in people’s mind.

Warning - Domain name sales scam

Nominet the registry for .uk domain names has warned of a domain name sales scam.

.uk and .com domain name registrants are being contacted by a company called Domain Name Registrar (UKDNR). They are claiming to be a Nominet member, and using pressure sales tactics to convince the caller that someone else is trying to register .uk domains relating to their particular business. They then suggest that they register the .uk domains for them.

Nominet want to make it clear that UKDNR are not a Nominet member and have no association with them.

They advise anyone who receives a call from this company to not give out any personal information, such as financial information. If you have any concerns regarding this and possible other .uk domain name sales scams, you can contact their registrant services team on 01865 332244 or by email at nominet@nominet.org.uk.

Firefox 3 - Guiness world record attempt

June 17th 2008 was Firefox 3 Download Day, an attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the most software downloaded in 24 hours.

Within only a short time of launch their servers were working overtime, and the record attempt was almost wrecked as they buckled under the weight of visitors. Once they we back up and running the record attempt began. They were serving almost 9,000 downloads a minute, which at that right meant they would achieve 5 - 7 million downloads. With less than an hour to go they were at 7.8 million downloads and were hoping to break the 8 million mark, and they did it! They exceeded 8 million downloads in the 24 hour period. They are now waiting for Guinness World Records to validate their record attempt.

Firefox is the second most popular web browser after Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Firefox 3 promises a faster web surfing experience, loading webpages three to four times faster than Firefox 2.0 and more than seven times faster than Microsoft's Internet Explorer. In addition to this they have added new security features for safer browsing, and much much more.

Check out the download day website www.spreadfirefox.com/en-US/worldrecord/ which shows a very interesting map of the world and the number of downloads made in each country, along with a link to download Firefox 3.
