Update
The European Commission has announced that Europe's own
top-level-domain .eu will be live and available by the end
of the year.
The Commission said that the domain will give
businesses higher visibility within the single market, and
will level the playing field for electronic commerce.
Information
Society and Media Commissioner Viviane Reding described the
agreement between ICANN and EURid as a landmark in the history
of the .eu project. "It gives the green light for the
final technical preparations to permit .eu to become a reality
before the end of the year," she added. For the first
four months of 2006, registrations will be limited to public
bodies and registered trademarks. This will prevent people
registering www.microsoft.eu, www.ebay.eu, www.amazon.eu,
and so on.
The Commission says it is aware that some companies
are offering to pre-register or reserve domain names. It
warns against taking up these offers, given the risks of
confusion or even fraud.

| Are all the best domain names already
taken? |
[top] |
|
| |
If your quick enough
you can get the Domain Name you have always wanted!
A lot of them were registered years ago BUT every day thousands
of domains are surrendered by their owners who fail to renew
or pay for the registration fees on their expiring domains.
These domain names are made available again and this creates
an opportunity for you to own a domain that may have been registered
as long as two years ago! When a domain owner fails to pay
the registration renewal fees on a domain, that domain is placed
on hold for a short period of time. If the domain owner pays
the outstanding registration fees while the expired domain
is on hold, he/she regains control. If the fees are not paid
before the on hold period ends, the domain is deleted from
the master domain registry. Once deleted, the domain is just
like any domain that is not registered; it is available for
anyone to register.
Many "surrendered" domains are re-registered within
days or even hours of being deleted, so don't let your
name expire and become available due to missing the deadline
and not paying renewal fees.
For more information on Domain Names and the features you will
receive visit Telivo
Domain Names.
Is there a domain name that
you or your company are particularly interested in?
You can view the status of all domain names via the Whois database.
This can be accessed via the Telivo website http://www.telivo.com.
Type the domain name into the search box and follow the links.
If the domain name is available you can purchase it by adding
it to your basket. If it is already taken you will be directed
to the Whois database via a link where you can review the owners
details, see when it was registered, which registrar agent
registered it, and when it was last updated.
Commercially the right domain names will help improve the profile
of your business and ensure you strengthen it on the Web. Domain
names produce a feeling of professionalism. If you are trying
to do business on the Web, a domain name is essential. There
is a perception that sites hosted under their own domain names
are more professional than free sites or ISP-hosted sites with
long convoluted addresses. Ensure that your domain name is
both memorable and enduring.

| What's in a Domain Name? |

Let
us explain!
Ever wondered what the differences are between domain names?
Why did you select .co.uk, .com or .me.uk? Maybe it was the
only one available or you decided to cover all the options
- the technical explanation is below.
The domain-name system (DNS) allows Internet users to refer
to web sites by words and phrases - domain names such as www.telivo.com
which can be typed straight into your tool bar rather than
the all-numeric IP addresses (such as "83.244.130.9")
assigned to each computer on the Internet. Each domain name
is made up of a series of character strings (called "labels")
separated by dots. The right-most label in a domain name is
referred to as its "top-level domain" (TLD). .i.e.
.com.
The DNS works like a tree:
TLD - top level domain = .org,
SLD - second level domain name = .org.uk and so on.
The responsibility for operating each TLD is delegated to a
particular organisation. These organisations are referred to
as "registry operators" or "sponsors".
Nominet is the registry operator for all .UK Internet names.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)
was formed to assume responsibility for the IP address for
global domain names (.com). Many global TLD's are sponsored
by an organisation. The sponsors have rules to which they must
adhere and which defines the purpose for which the sponsored
TLD has been created and will be operated. i.e. .mil which
is intended for use by US military organisations. The most
commonly registered domain names are .co.uk and .com. Visit
www.nominet.org.uk/Statistics/RegistrationStatistics/ for
their 2005 registration statistics. Unfortunately ICANN do
not publish
figures on the level of registrations.
Telivo offers customers
the opportunity to register seven of the most well know
domain names. All of these have unrestricted use. Customers
can either
register multiple domain names to ensure no one else can register
a similar domain name i.e. yourname.net, yourname.co.uk, yourname.com,
or yourname.org or as an alternative if the .com/.co.uk is
already taken. For more information on registering a domain
name visit or Domain
Names page.

| Don't Bin Your Used Printer Cartridges! |
[top] |
|

Recycle
by donating them to your favourite Charity!
Individuals and companies are being urged to save office
materials that normally end up in the bin - toner and printer
cartridges
- in order to help raise money for Charity.
Throwing away an old printer cartridge is not very environmentally-friendly
and very few printer cartridges are recycled. The rest are
buried in landfill sites. It takes more than 1.5 pints of
oil to make a new toner cartridge and in the last decade
it is
estimated that millions of pounds worth of printer cartridges
were dumped.
The Recycling Appeal www.recyclingappeal.com supply free
postage envelopes and can set up an account which allows
regular donors
to support any charity they want, including local causes.
There are many charities that are in need of used printer
cartridges and here are a very small number of them:
