I recently had a few problems with my computer
and realised it had been quite a while since
I backed up my bookmarks. It got me
thinking, we
have
a tendency to back up our documents, movies,
photos etc, but forget all about the bookmarks
we have. I myself would be lost without them.
So, here
are 2 ways to make sure all your bookmarks are
safe.
Back up your bookmarks
Every time you run a backup make sure to backup
your bookmarks (favourites). It is easy to do,
you simply export your bookmarks and here is
how to do it:
Firefox
- Click on the Bookmarks menu
- Then select Organise Bookmarks
- Select the folder/folders you wish to save
(if all bookmarks select just Bookmarks)
- Select Export from the File Menu
- Browse for the location
and folder you wish to save to.
- Then click Save
Internet Explorer
- Click on the File menu
- If you cannot see the File menu select the
Tools menu and then click on Menu Bar
- Now select
Import and Export
- Click next and select Export Favourites
- Select the folder/folders you wish to save
(if all favourites select just Favourites)
- Click next and then browse for the location
and folder you wish to save to.
- Then click next and finish to save the file.
Store your bookmarks online
There are many sites now a days where you can
now store your bookmarks. One of them is site called del.icio.us,
a social bookmarking website which allows you
to store
your bookmarks online. You can access and add
new ones from any computer anywhere in the world
that has internet access. You can also share
your favorites with friends, family or the del.icio.us
community.
Others include:
Google
Bookmarks - With Google
bookmarks you can create bookmarks in their
new version of
the Google Toolbar for IE, or at http://www.google.com/bookmarks.
You can then access your bookmarks from any computer
by simply signing in to your Google Account.
Spurl -
Is a online bookmarking service and search engine.
Again allowing you to store
and access your bookmarks from anywhere.
Furl -
This is a great bookmarking site, it is a little
different from the rest as when you
save a page with Furl it is downloaded and saved
to your own personal archive forever. Even if
the source website has been inactive for years
you can still see the page you saved, instead
of page not found.
There are many many more, so have a look around
and see which one you find the best.
