Virtual Private Server (VPS)

If you have outgrown your shared web hosting solution but are not quite ready to move on to a full dedicated server, then a VPS may provide the ideal solution.

A VPS gives you the flexibility and features that are missing in a shared web hosting environment. You can install software, configure applications and even reboot your system, all at the click of a button using the web based Plesk and Virtuozzo control panels.

You benefit from a lower monthly cost by sharing system resources like CPU and memory, but unlike shared hosting you are securely isolated from other users on the server. This means that other users actions on the same machine will not adversely affect your applications. In addition to all of this a VPS allows you to host multiple domains without the expense of numerous shared hosting accounts.

We offer three packages:

All of our packages are hosted in our UK based DataCentre, read more about our Network.

VPS Product Features

All of our packages offer Plesk Control Panel, this allows you to easily maintain and manage your domains. Combined with the power of Virtuozzo, complex server tasks can be managed with point-and-click simplicity.

VPS Lite

Ideal for that first step up from shared hosting, as a development server or for application testing.

The VPS Lite package offers fantastic value VPS Web hosting and provides you with the tools you need to set it up as you want it. With 5GB disk space and 50GB monthly traffic this package has everything the average user requires.

VPS Plus

Perfect for hosting resellers or game serving, the VPS Plus provides higher quotas for disk space and monthly traffic.

The VPS Plus package offers a generous amount of diskspace combined with a 100GB monthly traffic cap. Ideal for those looking to offer game serving solutions or reseller accounts.

VPS Ultra

VPS Ultra delivers the highest available resource levels and an unlimited domain licence for Plesk. Ideal for professional use.

VPS Ultra is our top of the range, fully featured package. The VPS Ultra package has a huge diskspace and monthly traffic quota as well as an unlimited domain licence, this package has everything you need to deliver a professional hosting solution.

Phishing Scam [top]

As a follow on from our article "Keep Safe Online" in the August Edition of the Telivo Newsletter. We are going to cover the email scam of Phishing.

Phishing is the act of sending an email to a user claiming to be an established legitimate organisation in an attempt to scam the user into giving private information that will be used for identity theft. The email asks the user to visit a Website that asks them to update personal information, such as passwords, credit cards and bank account details that the legitimate organisation already has. This Website is actually fake and has only been set up to steal the user’s information.

How to Spot A Phishing Scam

On first seeing the email it may not be obvious that is not a legitimate email from a company that a user does business with. The "From" field of the email may have the .com address of the company mentioned in the email, and the clickable link may also appear to be taking you to the company's Website, but will in fact take you to a fake Website. Remember looks can be deceiving, but with phishing scams the email is never from who is appears to be.

The scammers sending phishing emails send out millions of these emails hoping that a few recipients will act on them and provide their personal and financial information. Anyone with an email address is at risk of being phished. Any email address that has been made public on the Internet, posted on forums, newsgroups or on a Website is more susceptible to phishing as the email address can be saved by spiders that search the Internet and grab as many email addresses as they can. This is why phishing is profitable for these scammers as they can easily access millions of valid email addresses.

Phishing emails can appear to be from any bank, PayPal, eBay, credit card companies, an online retail store, from anywhere a user may have registered for an account, and usually would have supplied financial information when registering.

Never click the links within the text of the email always delete the email immediately. Once you have deleted the email then empty the trash bin as well. This will prevent any accidental clicks from happening. If you think it could possibly be a legitimate email still do not click the link in the message. Open your Web browser and type the URL to the Website in to the address bar of your browser and log on to the Web site as you normally would.

If you are wondering what to do once you have spotted a phishing email, you can notify the organsisation the phishing email is claiming to be from, as many companies do want to know if their company name is being used to try and scam people.

SPAM and Virus Filtering with MailGuard [top]

Mailguard is an advanced e-mail security and protection system designed to help safeguard e-mail from viruses, spam, worms, malicious content and other email threats.

How it works

When an e-mail is sent it normally passes through a number of machines that route the message as it travels from the sender to the recipient. Mailguard acts just like one of these routers but with the added security benefits of filtering viruses + spam messages and shielding your inbound mailserver address from spammers and hackers.

When e-mail is sent to an account that has Mailguard enabled, all inbound messages are filtered and then delivered to your mailserver. E-mail that is flagged by Mailguard as spam or a virus will be placed in to the quarantine area and will not be delivered to your mailserver. E-mail accounts protected by Mailguard will receive periodic Quarantine Reports by e-mail. The Quarantine Report will contain a summary of any mail that has been quarantined in the last 30 days and a link to the Mailguard quarantine web interface.

Mailguard implements industry-leading technologies and systems that continuously monitor for new spam techniques, viruses and other threats, to provide accurate filtering and a low false positive rate (legitimate email incorrectly marked as spam). On the rare occasion that any mail is incorrectly quarantined the web based quarantine area allows users to un-quarantine messages to their mailbox. The web based quarantine area also allows users to:

  • view message headers

  • view virus + spam reports

  • view spam scores

  • delete messages

  • set the frequency of the Quarantine Reports adjust the sensitivity of the spam filtering

If your hosting package does not include Mailguard Virus & Spam Filtering you can add it as an additional feature by logging into http://yourdomainhere.com/siteadmin. For more information on our hosting packages and pricing visit www.telivo.com/web-hosting.html
