What is a Static IP Address?

An IP address is a unique number, akin to a telephone number, used by computers to refer to each other when sending information via the Internet. Normally when you connect to the Internet you will be dynamically assigned an IP address for that session from a pool of available addresses. This means that if you disconnect and connect again you will normally be assigned a different IP address.
