BroadBand Static IP Address
What
is a Static IP Address?
An IP address is a unique number, akin to a telephone number,
used by computers to refer to each other when sending information
via the Internet. Normally when you connect to the Internet
you will be dynamically assigned an IP address for that session
from a pool of available addresses. This means that if you
disconnect and connect again you will normally be assigned
a different IP address.
With a static IP address each time you
connect you will be assigned the same IP address every
time. This allows you to host your own web server, email
server or set up a VPN (Virtual Private Network) at home
or in the office, and is compatible with all of our Broadband
ADSL packages.
Do I need one?
There are many reasons why you may want to have your own
static IP address. The main reasons being:
1. Security - Because you have your own
unique address, you can restrict/gain access to certain
protected servers, this is often vital for businesses.
2. Applications - Some internet/mail
applications are built to work with a static IP, so your
location is fixed. This is often the case in business if
you run a network and use an independent PC/server to collect
emails.
3. Hosting - By having a static IP address
it will allow you to host your own web server, because
your location becomes fixed.
