Step-by-step Guides

FTP - File Transfer Protocol - Apple Mac

Once you have ordered hosting for your domain name(s) you will receive a set-up e-mail with the information you need to upload your files to the server and configure your e-mail software.

You will need some FTP software to transfer the web files from your computer to the server. If you do not have any FTP software click here to download cyberduck a freeware Apple Mac FTP client.

Once you have installed the software on your machine open the program.

1. Choose New Connection.

2. In the New Connection pop-up window enter the following:

Host / Server - www.yourdomain.com
Username - yourdomain.com
Password - As supplied

3. Now click OK and your computer should try and connect to the Internet if it is not already and then connect to the server that is hosting your domain name.

Most FTP software works by presenting you with a split screen your local directory structure on one side of the screen (what's on your computer) and the remote directory structure on the other side of the screen (what's on the server). Fetch however only shows you whats on the server.

4. To upload files, locate them in your Finder, select the ones you want to upload, and then drag them to the main CyberDuck window.

5. To download files to your machine drag the files from the remote directory (main CyberDuck window) to Finder.

6. To delete a file from the server select the file(s). Right click and choose Delete

7. Once the files are uploaded the remote directory part of the screen will refresh.
You will now be able to see the files you have uploaded in the remote directory structure part of the screen.

IMPORTANT
You must make sure that the very first web page you want people to see when they type your domain name into their browser is called index.html. If you do not upload a index.html file then you will only see the default server holding page when you visit your web address.

As soon as you have uploaded your web files your web site will be live on the Internet. You can use FTP to re-upload files you have changed or to delete files you no longer need.
